Material Descriptions

Base Rock: This is a 3/4" minus rock mixed with a binding material to help with compaction. This rock packs well and can be used for driveways, pads, under concrete & asphalt. We stock two types of base rock; one is a dark charcoal almost black, while the other is a lighter gray.

Ophir Driveway Rock w/ Binder: This is a 1 1/2" minus round rock with a sand, clay, and dirt binding material to help with compaction. Can be used as an alternative to crushed base rock.

Gray Crushed: This clean crushed is available in three sizes ( 3/8", 1/2", 3/4"). This rock is often used for pathways and driveways. Because this rock is crushed it lays down very well.

3/8" Black Chips: This is a small crushed rock that is often used for pathways and driveways. This product is very similar to the gray crushed but is darker in color. Compacts well.

"C" Ballast: This rock is a dark charcoal almost black rock approximately 3/4"-1 1/4" in size. This rock can be used in driveways or parking areas.

"D" Ballast: This rock is a dark charcoal almost black rock approximately 1"-3" in size. This rock can be used to lay on newly cut in roads and driveways, especially in the winter when wet subgrades are in issue.

Serpentine: This is a crushed rock that is available in various sizes, however we stock only 3/4" size, requests for other sizes will be considered special orders ( Contact office for price quotes). This rock can be used as a decorative rock or in walkways. This material contains asbestos.

Gray Washed: This product is a decorative river rock approximately 3/4" in size. This product can be used as a ground cover, in dog runs, or in creek beds.

Reject: This product is a tiny round rock about the size of a pea and is available in gray tones or salt and pepper tones. This rock can be used in dog runs, as ground cover, walkways, fill material, or under concrete.

Salt & Pepper: This is a decorative smooth river rock that is available in 1/2" or 3/4" and can be used for ground cover, walk ways, dog runs, etc. The tones vary from beige, white, and charcoal.

Drain Rock: This is a 1 1/2" smooth river rock that can be used in leach fields, for decorative purposes, or in dry creek beds.

Native Boulders: This products availability is limited. Sizes will vary. These rocks are often reddish-orange in color and are excavated out of the earth. When pressure washed the rocks tend to turn more grayish in color. Can be used for rock walls, lining driveways or walkways, or larger rocks serve as decorative accents.

Field Stone / Moss Rock: This is a decorative boulder that can be used for rock walls, in waterfall
features, decorative accents, or to line a driveway or walkway. Rock sizes will vary. Rock does not always contain actual moss on them.

Cobbles / River Rock: These smooth river rocks vary in color (usually gray & beige tones) and are approximately 6-12" in size. They can be used to outline areas or to create dry creek beds.

Limestone Boulders: This rock takes on blue, gray, and white tones and is ideal for border, accents, and retaining walls. Sizes will vary ( 6"-24").

Bedding/Fill Sand: This sand is a screened sand that could be used to mix in with tough soil, used to bed in trenches, under pavers, or as fill. (Non PG&E spec)

PG&E Sand: This sand is PG&E approved and is used in trenches that will be inspected. Could also be used under pavers, concrete, or for fill. *PG&E sand is scarce. Plaster sand could be used as a substitute

Plaster Sand: This is a fine grained sand whitish in color and can be used to mix with mortar, to lay under portable swimming pools or pavers, and to fill children's sandboxes. This sand can also be used to fill trenches (Meets PG&E specs. )

Concrete Mix: This is a sand and gravel mix used primarily to mix cement.

Black Earth Topsoil: This is a blended material that contains a dark rich soil, humus, ash and sand along with a variety of nutrients. This is an excellent topsoil and can be planted directly into or mixed in with existing soil.

Kinney's Garden Mix: This is a nursery mix used for flower and vegetable gardens. Contains various nutrients, manure, orchard soil, compost, and worm castings. Ready to plant. Not recommended for small planters and/or pots, if used for this we recommend adding some sand and compost to help with drainage.

Compost: This product may vary due to source availability. Made up of organic material, and aged bark fines. Used primarily to break up clay type soils or as a soil amendment. Can also be used around plants to help retain moisture or sprinkled over grass seed.

Fill Dirt: This product is used for fill purposes or to raise or level areas. Fill dirt may contain debris, roots, rocks, etc.

Screened Dirt / Loam: This product is a sandy loam and dirt mix. May contain tiny rocks. Often used as a soil amendment or other landscaping purposes.

Sandy Loam: This product is a sandy loam and dirt mix. May contain tiny rocks. Often used as a soil amendment or other landscaping purposes.

Walk-On Fir: This is a shredded bark often used for ground cover, in planter beds, or for paths, or to help control weeds. Usually reddish brown in color.

Small Chunky Fir: These are nuggets approximately 1" in diameter. Often used as ground cover, in planter beds, or on pathways, or to help control weeds. Usually reddish brown in color.

Large Chunky Fir: These are nuggets approximately 2-3" in diameter. Often used as ground cover or around plants to help control weeds and maintain moisture. Usually reddish brown in color.

Blonde Shredded Cedar: This is a shredded material often used as a ground cover or to help maintain erosion control. Can be used around plants to help retain moisture or control weeds. Light blonde in color with some red and brown accents.

Red Shredded Cedar: This product resembles gorilla hair and is very finely shredded and often clumped together. Can be used to help retain moisture, control weeds, or for erosion control. The color is a brighter red then the fir bark.

Playground Chips: This is a resilient wood playground fiber used underneath playground equipment and is manufactured from soft wood chips.

Fill Rock: This product is subject to availability. Contains various sized rock and possibly dirt and sand material mixed in. Used primarily as a cheap fill product.
